Get Connected with Each Other

One of the most meaningful aspects of church life is our connection with other people who share the journey of Christian faith. It is through other people that God often comes to us; and it is through us that God often reaches out to others in love. First United Methodist Church encourages everyone to connect with a small group or ministry. When we become involved in the lives of other people we grow more Christ-like in our living. Check out these opportunities to get connected with others:

  • Adult Ministries

Our Adult Ministries are designed to prepare, challenge, and inspire women and men to a life of Christian discipleship. Our Sunday School classes, as well as information on our ministries that are focused on Women & Men can all be found in this section. If you have a question or a suggestion about our Adult Ministries, please contact Carolyn McGee, Spiritual Life Coordinator.

  • Children's Ministries

At First UMC, we strive to provide programs where children experience God's love in action and find guidance in sharing God's Word with others. Our goal is to provide a loving and accepting environment. For more information about our Children's Ministry programs, please contact Alex Erwine, our Director of Discipleship for Youth & Children.

  • PACEM Volunteers Needed!

Every year, during the coldest winter months, churches from all over our community work to provide a hot meal and warm place to sleep for the homeless men and women of Charlottesville. First UMC’s two weeks for hosting the men will be from February 23rd through March 9th. Your help is needed to serve as greeters, shower assistants, an overnight presence, PACEM assistants, kitchen assistants, dinner chefs, meal servers, or just engaging in conversation and fellowship with our guests.

Please review the brief volunteer positions that are listed below and click the links to be taken to a Google Doc where you can sign up online. The "pen & paper" sign-up sheets will still be available in the hallway on your way down to the Fellowship Hall. We will do our best to keep the online and church sheets up to date – so please feel free to use either method.

A volunteer coordinator is also needed to oversee each of the 5 volunteer areas. These 5 volunteer coordinators would be responsible for simply checking in (via phone or email) with their volunteer areas and making sure that there is someone on hand to cover that position every night. Please let Tommy or Virginia know if you are willing to serve as one of these volunteer coordinators.

  • Service Opportunities In First UMC

We are a growing community!  There are many ways to get involved within First UMC.

  • Young Adults

We have an active Young Adult Ministry that includes a weekly small group, an inter-denominational meet-up group, and we also offer many opportunities for service and outreach.  You can find most of our young adults on Sunday mornings in the 9:45 Contemporary service although there are many who also appreciate and frequent our other services as well. If you have any questions or a suggestions about our Young Adult Ministry, please contact Meredith Rose, Young Adult Coordinator.

  • Youth Ministry

First United Methodist Church recognizes how important the middle and high school years are - they are a time of challenge, change, and wonder as youth investigate who they are in the Lord. First UMC Youth Group helps teens on that journey of self-discovery and our youth are vibrant and vital members of the church community.
