The following words were composed by members of First United Methodist Church who were present on August 12, 2017. Their first-hand accounts of what they saw and experienced are presented here as a witness to the overwhelming love, grace, and mercy of Jesus Christ and the continuing call to make disciples for the transformation of the world.

Cindy Poots Remington: When the call went out for volunteers to help at our church on August 12, the day of the “Unite the Right” rally, I had mixed feelings.  Stay home, away from the potential danger of the thousands of white supremacists expected to attend or stand against the display of hatred and racism in the name of Christian love?

First UMC seeks to offer multiple opportunities to engage with our community and educate ourselves on issues of racial inequality and injustice throughout the year. Please review the information below and prayerfully consider your involvement in the activities, events, programs, and educational opportunities that become available. It is our hope to keep this page updated with events, opportunities, and information that best facilitate our mission in transforming the world through making disciples of Jesus Christ. Please contact Brandon Henning, Chair of our Witness Team, with any suggestions, updates, or corrections.

First UMC serves the greater community on the East Coast and internationally, through short-term and recurring missions, including Appalachia Service Project, Friends of Ft. Liberte Mission in Haiti, a partnership with Kaunus UMC in Lithuania, and Stop Hunger Now. For more information on the Outreach Ministries of First UMC, please contact Cindy Remington, Chair of the Outreach Ministry Team.

First UMC members serve in the Charlottesville community in a wide variety of ways, but we are always looking for new ways to demonstrate the hospitality, love, and grace of Jesus Christ. If you have any new ideas about how we can better serve our community please contact Brandon Henning - the Chairperson of our Witness Ministry Team, or Cindy Remington - the Chairperson of our Outreach Ministry Team
