As a result of the wide-spread pandemic of the novel coronavirus and an order by the Governor of Virginia that all public gatherings of more than 10 people are banned for 30 days, all of our public worship services have moved online for the time being. Everyone is invited to join us for worship on Sunday mornings by visiting our Facebook Page or our Youtube Channel

Lent is the season when the Bethlehem Star is replaced by the Cross of Calvary. We are invited to experience the Love of Jesus that will go with us into the dust and ashes and dirt of this world believing in the promise of New Life. The light of God's Love that came into this world at Christmas will redeem and restore this world at the resurrection. Christians are encouraged to practice acts of devotion, prayer and self-denial as representations of our willingness to go with Jesus into the darkness of a hurting world in order that it might be raised with him at the Resurrection. This Lent at First UMC, each member of the congregation will be given dirt and a seed in a pot at the beginning of Lent. Keep it at your home or office and care for it and pray over it as the miracle of growth is going on under the ground. Bring the pot back to church on Easter so we can all see the evidence of New Life that is promised in the Resurrection.  Everyone is encouraged to stay connected through the Lenten season by posting/sharing thoughts and images on social media of what is happening, either in yourself or in your potted plant.

2020 Lenten Worship Schedule & Themes

April 5 – Palm Sunday

This coming Sunday (April 5), everyone is invited to gather around their screens at 7pm for a special Sunday Evening Worship Service. This Palm/Passion Sunday worship service will invite you to use candles and explore what it means to be a light in the darkness (literally, theologically, and otherwise). As people of faith we don't run away from darkness, but instead carry the light of Christ into it. In order to do that effectively, we need to first acknowledge the darkness and then prepare ourselves for the holy work that still lies before us.

Some Logistics: The worship service will "go live" at around 5pm on the church's Facebook Page and Youtube Channel. At around 6pm an email will be sent out that contains direct links (just like the past few weeks). And then, perhaps with a little more coordination and "togetherness" than we've done before - let's meet for worship online at the designated hour of 7pm.

Themes: Flowering, Ripen, Mature
Sermon Scripture: John 16

April 6 through April 11 – Holy Week

There are members of the Music Ministry Team who have prepared a few selections that we will be premiering on our Facebook Page every day during Holy Week (April 6-11) along with some prayers and meditations from the pastors.

Rev. Heaton & Rev. Woodson are inviting the congregation of First U.M.C. to join them for a nightly bible study during Holy Week. The bible study will meet at 9pm every night on Zoom and will be able to host about 100 people! Click this link to Join the Zoom Bible Study at 9pm every night: https://zoom.us/j/468012936

If you have any issues with using Zoom or connecting to this meeting, please email Rev. Woodson at philwoodson@cvillefirstumc.org

April 12 – Easter Sunday

Themes: Harvest, Reap, Gather
Scripture: Matthew 13:1-9
